It is the first question almost every traveler asks when they start picturing a stay on Isla Mujeres: how easy is it to get there, how long does it take, and what are the options between the airport and the island. The good news is that the trip is far simpler than it looks on a map, and with a little planning it becomes the first memorable moment of the vacation, the point where the pace of the airport falls away and the Mexican Caribbean starts to take over, long before you reach the door of the villa.
Start here: the airport is not next to the water
Cancún International Airport sits south of the city, while the ferries to Isla Mujeres leave from the north, either from Puerto Juárez or from one of the Hotel Zone piers, depending on the operator. No one walks from baggage claim to the boat. You first cross Cancún, roughly 20 to 30 kilometers (12 to 19 miles) depending on which pier you use, and only then board the ferry. Knowing that upfront is what turns arrival day from a scramble into an easy morning.
Getting to the pier: three ways
Private transfer, booked in advance. After a long flight, with kids or with a lot of luggage, this is the one we recommend. You are picked up at the terminal and dropped at the pier, no stops and no transfers. Figure 30 to 40 minutes to Puerto Juárez, a bit longer to the Hotel Zone piers. It is the option most of our guests choose when they want the trip to feel like part of the stay rather than a chore. We can arrange it ahead of time so this leg is handled before you even board your flight.
ADO bus plus a short taxi. The ADO bus leaves directly from the airport terminals to downtown Cancún for around 100 pesos, and a short taxi from the ADO station to the pier adds another 100 to 150 pesos. It is a reasonable choice if you travel light and are not in a hurry, though it means one extra transfer and about an hour and a half door to door once you count the waiting.
Taxi straight to the pier. One single leg, no downtown detour, at a higher price than the bus and taxi combination. Agree on the fare before you get in, since airport taxis work with fixed zone rates.
The ferry: the easiest and best part of the trip
Once you are at the pier, crossing over is the simple part, and honestly the best part. Ultramar runs most of the passenger service, with departures roughly every 30 minutes for most of the day, from early morning until late at night. The crossing takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on the pier: Puerto Juárez and Gran Puerto are the shortest, the Hotel Zone piers a little longer.
An adult ticket runs about 290 pesos each way, with a reduced fare for children based on height, and it is worth arriving 30 minutes before departure so you can check in without rushing. Try to get a spot on the open deck. That is where the first postcard of the trip happens, turquoise water opening up and the island slowly filling the horizon.
If you are renting a car and want to bring it over, there is a separate vehicle ferry from Punta Sam, a little north of Puerto Juárez. Most guests do not need it. Isla Mujeres is easy to get around by golf cart, bike or taxi, and leaving the car behind is part of the point.
Traveling with kids
The ferry itself is an easy win with children: open deck, air-conditioned interior, and a crossing short enough that even restless kids enjoy it. The part worth planning is the stretch inside Cancún. Moving a stroller, backpacks and suitcases through a bus-to-taxi transfer is harder than it sounds on paper, which is exactly why a direct private transfer earns its price: you handle the luggage once. It also helps to time your flight so you reach the island in daylight, especially on a first trip, so everyone can settle in before dark.
Luggage: the question we get most
The ferry takes suitcases without any real restriction beyond the usual weight and size limits, so it is not the bottleneck people expect. The land portion is. With the bus and taxi combination your bags stay in your hands and get moved at every change of vehicle. A door-to-door private transfer removes that entirely, which matters most on longer stays or when you are traveling with dive or snorkel gear.
How much time and money to plan for
All in, a traveler using a private transfer to the pier plus the Ultramar ferry usually gets from the airport to the island in a little over an hour, including the wait before boarding. The bus and taxi route takes an hour and a half to two hours, more if you hit traffic on the way to Puerto Juárez. On budget, the cheapest route comes out to roughly 490 to 540 pesos per person one way, adding up the land legs and the ferry ticket. A private transfer costs more and buys you fewer things that can go wrong, which is the trade most guests are happy to make when the goal is to arrive and start relaxing.
